R kernel not available when opening Deepnote notebooks in VS Code extension #221

@wamalab

Description

@wamalab

Applies To

  • Notebooks (.deepnote files)
  • Interactive Window and/or Cell Scripts (.py files with #%% markers)

What happened?

When I open a Deepnote notebook through the Deepnote VS Code extension, R is not available from the kernel picker, even though:

  • R is installed

  • IRkernel is installed and registered

  • R works normally in local .ipynb notebooks in VS Code

This only happens with notebooks opened via the Deepnote extension. Regular Jupyter notebooks show the R kernel normally.
