In draft4, schemas can only be objects; booleans can only be used in these keywords: additionalItems, uniqueItems, additionalProperties, so this was causing an error in my implementation. This document is only used by drafts 2020-12 and later, and there are special versions of that file in the versioned remotes/ directories.
